GOLDENDOODLE

ORIGIN

Goldendoodles came along during the 1990’s. With Labradoodle breeding on the rise, the Goldendoodle was bred to see if the gentle nature of the Golden Retriever and the allergy friendly coat of the Poodle would produce a good genetic combination. This cross results in “hybrid vigor” which is the phenomenon that the first cross between two unrelated purebred lines is healthier and grows better than either parent line. The Goldendoodle is a good-natured family pet and they tend to be allergy friendly and have low to non-shedding coats.

CHARACTERISTICS

Goldendoodles are very similar to labradoodles. All of the characteristics of labradoodles apply. Coloring is slightly different- goldendoodles are typically Red, Apricot, or Cream (sometimes with white markings).

CHARICTERISTICS

Much like labradoodles and goldendoodles, bernedoodles are desirable because they tend to develop the strengths from both Berners and Poodles. Bernedoodles are generally low or non-shedding and incredibly smart like the Poodle, while also having an easy going temperament and friendly demeanor like the Berner. Bernedoodles are usually black and white, black and rust, or tri-color, meaning black, rust and brilliant white. The overall look combines traits of the Poodle and the Berner. Some puppies in a particular litter may have the overall bulk of the Bernese while others may lean more towards the Poodle with a slighter build.

ORIGIN

Due to the rising popularity of the “doodle” breeds, bernedoodles have burst onto the scene in the past 5-10 years. They have become exceedingly popular for many of the same reasons as labradoodles and goldendoodles. Bernese Mountain Dogs, also referred to as “Berners”, are traced back to Switzerland and became popular as early as the 1900s. Berners are exceptionally strong dogs, which made them good working dogs for farmers. Their sunny disposition and mellow demeanor have made them increasingly popular family dogs. More recently, bernedoodles have become popular.

“ULTRA” Doodles

What is an Ultra Bernedoodle or Ultra Goldendoodle? Doodle owners love their dogs! And many of them made the transition to owning a doodle after first having a purebred Golden Retriever or Bernese Mountain Dog. An “ultra” goldenoodle/bernedoodle is a doodle mix that has a higher percentage of Golden Retriever or Bernese Mountain Dog, as opposed to a doodle mix that has a higher Poodle percentage. There are many benefits of an “Ultra Doodle”, including:

  • A chunky and dense body structure like a Golden/BMD

  • Fun loving, outgoing, calm and happy-go-lucky temperament

  • A gorgeous wavy and soft coat more similar to the pure bred Golden/BMD

  • More traditional tri color markings and golden coloring

Do Ultra Doodles shed? Ultra Doodles may have some light shedding, as they are a higher percentage of the shedding breed. We like to say that ultra doodles have “reduced shedding, with the possibility of being low-non shedding”. Oftentimes, shedding amount will be similar to an F1 doodle.

Why do we breed Ultra Doodles? Before Gail bred for her first litter of Australian Labradoodles, she was a hobby breeder of pure bred Labrador Retrievers. There is just something special about those Retrievers and Berners. The Ultra Doodle combines the things we all love about Retrievers and Berners with the wonderful traits of the Poodle. We like to say that the Ultra Doodle is the ultimate dog for the person that isn’t sure they want to make the switch to a “doodle”, but that also wouldn’t mind a dog that is highly intelligent and sheds less than they’re accustomed to even though shedding will likely be more than a mutli-gen doodle.
